Toasted at Plushstock 2009

If you put things off till the last minute, they only take a minute to do, right? Well, I finally got my pieces done for Plushstock 2009. The first is a Hippie Mr. Toastee....and I think he's a bit toasted too ^_^ He is crocheted with 100% cotton yarn, stuffed with an all natural eco-fil, his clothes are made from a old retro washcloth I got fom my grandma, and the beads on is clothes and hemp headband are repurposed from old jewelry. He's so hippie you can almost smell the patchuli:

Also, because of my love of puns, I also made a PEACE of toastee....a mini Mr. Toastee made with tie dye yarn and with a handsewn peace sign on his back:

Me and My Monkey

Well, hi there! Sort of in response to Diane's nostalgic post from last week, I would like to explain that I was never into doll's when I was a kid either. My first soft toys were monkeys (had you guessed?). Please excuse the grimy nature of the monkeys, I would have taken a better photo but they are in a box somewhere because we moved house a few weeks ago and I have misplaced them (wahhhh!! noooo!!).

Originally there were two of them: Big Monkey and Lickle Monkey. Apparently I would not leave the shop without Big Monkey, and so it began. Big and Lickle Monkey were later joined by Monkey Magic, named after MONKEY, my favourite TV programme from the early 80s. Partly due to my love of monkeys I spent a lot of my childhood thinking I wanted to be a vet, or go out to the jungle and work with wild apes. I guess I sort of still find that idea pretty interesting, except that I'm more afraid of having my face torn off by gigantic spiders these days. So making sock monkeys is probably the safer option.

Anyway enough of my rambling. I'd like to now point you in the direction of some fantastic monkey-related plushteam offerings to add to your own personal monkey collection.

Predictable? Moi? ;)

Firstly these little apes from Phil Barbato are well and truly on my wishlist, especially Kecil (the green one) - look at his long, hairy arms!! Ace.

Gorilla No. 1 from zfla is the perfect friend for the Dian Fossey in you. That is, the Dian Fossey in you which makes up the small percentage of you that's not terrified of being mauled to death or chased up a tree.

Finally, call yourself a plush monkey blog? Where's the happy amigurumi banana? Oh wait, there it is. Thanks yummypancake :D

Plush Guitar for PLUSHSTOCK 2009

Yeah, that's right! What is Plushstock without a guitar? This is a mondo plush guitar measuring in at twenty inches in height!

I sewed up the fleece and then added free form crochet embellishments. It feels great to hold and you want to strum it as soon as you get it in your hands. There's even a little mouse on there.

Check back here around the 16th when we'll get our voting going. You get to choose your favorites!

A little Nostalgia

Since it's my turn to contribute to the Plush Team blog and since I'm feeling a bit nostalgic lately, I've decided to take a break from the contemporary plush world and to step back to the many "plush" characters I loved as a child. Now, because of our age differences, this may vary for the many plush team members and readers but you're more than welcome to add to the list as you see fit. This list certainly does not encompass ALL of my fuzzy loves, as you can imagine there were many, but it does give you the major highlights...

First, let me preface by saying this, I was never a doll person. I never had barbies or anything else in that genre, I never fully understood my American Girl doll, and I rarely played with the Cabbage Patch doll I did have. Of course, there is absolutely nothing wrong with these things, nor is there anything wrong with the people who were partial to them. I am just stating a fact. Not a doll person. BUT, I was a stuffed animal person. I always, always had a stuffed animal with me as a child. On every family trip, the goal was always to get a stuffed animal souvenir. It was always my reward for a good report card or my boo-boo prize when I was sick. (And I must admit, it's still my boo-boo prize sometimes even in adulthood) I just love stuffed animals, plushies, softies, however you'd like to refer to them. There's something so incredibly comforting about them... they're very hard to resist!

Now, onto the list...

The Puffalump
- soft, squishy, silky, and totally huggable (I was the proud owner of the cow with the little dress... )

The Popples
- soft, small, and interactive (Just thinking about these little balls of joy sets my heart aflutter...)

The Carebear
- classic, squeezable, and loyal (Sunshine Bear always made my days a little brighter and Bedtime Bear kept my sister company while she slept...)

Sprite
(of Rainbow Brite fame) - does this really need an explanation?

Snuffy
- gigantic, hairy, and utterly adorable (Admittedly, my favorite Sesame Street character...)

Oscar the Grouch
- grumpy, silly, and... well... an acquired taste (a close second to Snuffy...)

Red of Fraggle Rock
- quirky, lovable, and full of spunk (a dear role model?)

And last but certainly not least...

Kermit
- a true gentleman (who could resist such a handsome fella?...)

As a plush artist, I have to say, I am honored to be able to list these wonderful creations as childhood inspirations. And with that, I am off to rummage through my parent's attic to see if I can recover some of these treasures!

Plush Dreams Part 2

For the most part it seems that the Plush Team wishes they dreamed more plush flavored dreams. It definitely seems that even if they don't dream plush specifically they day dream it or are inspired by the moments before they drift off to sleep. Here's more of what they had to say.

Marcy of Moons Creations says, "I want to dream plush."

Casie of Bebe's Babies says, "Usually I fall asleep thinking about a new design," though she doesn't necessarily dream about plush.

Jessie of Pterodactyl Pants says, "I once dreamt of a gigantic plush shovel. In the dream it had been made by me, although in reality I have never tried to make a shovel . . . perhaps I should give it a shot?" And yes, Jessie, we think you should.

Becky of Scrumptious Delights says, "I do spend sleepless nights thinking plush and once I start its impossible to sleep."

Abby of Abbydid says, "I soooo want to dream about plush."

Happy plush dreams!
