Meet the Maker Monday: Absolutely Small

Claire Chambers of Absolutely Small sews mostly chickens. You heard me. Chickens. And their pants, and not just any pants, but varied, soul-defining and exceptionally cute pants.

Despite several escape attempts, Claire still lives in a very, very small town in the California Gold Country. Visit chickenpants headquarters at: http://www.etsy.com/shop/absolutelysmall

Tell us how you make plush.
I usually start with an image, draw it, and translate it into a pattern in my own pokey way. I don't have formal training so I don't know the "right" way. I just do it, and sometimes it works.

I generally work in batches and against a deadline. I need deadlines to function. Sad, really.

Where did you learn your skills?

I'm mostly self-taught, but I picked up a few things from a dear friend who is an amazing seamstress, and from books and magazines.

Describe your workspace.

It's bright, pink, and cluttered! All my favorite things are there. I love it! Here's a photo of right before it was fully stocked:

What inspires you?

A lot of my inspirations are visual artists: Maira Kalman, James Kochalka, Rama Hughes, to name a few. I admire their style, and how prolific they are. In the personal realm, my animals (two pugs, one bunny, and a fast-growing tortoise) and my husband Dan are my muses. Dan and I share a twisted sense of word play, and a lot of bad puns get turned into plushies.

I'm really lucky to be a part of the Plush Team, and to be exposed to so much plush talent. Seeing members’ original and amazing art keeps me inspired.

How do you promote your work?

I have a Facebook fan page that is really fun: http://tr.im/ChickenpantsFanPage
A website: http://absolutelysmall.com
twitter: http://twitter.com/absolutelysmall
a blog: http://chickenpants.net
and have Chickenpants stop motion videos: http://www.youtube.com/user/absolutelysmall
and movies!: http://www.youtube.com/user/absolutelysmall
I'm also the admin over at The Needle- http://theneedle.org

How do you fit plush-making into the rest of your life?

Chickenpants are my full time job. I try to stop work when it's time to make dinner. Er...I try to actually make dinner every night to transition out of work mode, which doesn't always work, but helps add balance to my life.

Describe your dreams for new designs or projects.

I'm working on another batch of LOST Chickenpants. I've been toying with the idea of some Battlestar Galactica Chickenpants, too...we'll see.

I'm also in the middle of the huge project of illustrating all the Chickenpants so far. It's going to take years.
