Luck O' the Irish

The Plush Team figures that we all could use a little extra luck these days, so with that in mind, here are the lucky St. Patrick's Day plush made by various members of the Team. All of these plush goodies are available now in the Team's Etsy Shop.

Why not carry your good luck with you wherever you go with this fun Shamrock Hat Mini Toastee keychain by Yummy Pancake.

Or, you can rub this Shamrock Baby Pookity's belly for good luck throughout the year. It was made to be oh so soft and cuddly by Dog & Daemona.

If you're really lucky, you might catch Liam O'Brian the Leprechaun and he'll grant you a wish or two. Seamus Clodhopper figures he's really lucky to live in a beautiful country like Ireland, so inviting Seamus over to your house for a visit is sure to bring you some luck. Both Liam and Seamus were made by Plush Goodness.

What could be more Irish than a good Shillealagh? Shillealaghs are Irish walking sticks, but as Christina of Christina Ward Creatures says, this one is nice and soft, and good for "beating...ah hem...walking." ;D

You could use a plush Shillealagh to round up some of these adorable Irish Sheebies by Susarto, of which Sean is just one of three.

OR, use that shillealagh to handle these super soft, lovely and POSABLE spotted snakes made by abbydid.

Why not stop on by the Plush Team's shop and get lucky? ;D

Plush Team Emitto: Volume 1

We have a lot of talented folks on the Plush Team and any time you get talent together, you're going to find people who have published works. I've been collecting some of the team's published works for a few weeks now and in honor of the upcoming release of our first Plush Team book, I'd like to share a few with you:

Most of our followers know that the Plush Team earned several features in the Winter 2010 issue of Stuffed Magazine, but did you know that some notable Plush Teamers have also been published in the Winter 2009 and Summer 2009 issues as well?

There are just too many team members who were featured in the magazines to list them all here. Suffice it to say, it was totally a team effort!

Crammed Organisms

Another collection where you'll find Plush Team members is the 2008 copy of Crammed Organisms. Published in a limited edition of 5,000 copies, this book included Absolutely Small, Christina Ward, Follow the White Rabbit, Love and a Sandwich, Moon's Creations, Plush Goodness, Pterodactyl Pants, Spooky Daddy, and The Pixels.

Craft Leftovers Monthly
The December 2009 issue of Craft Leftovers Monthly features an interview with Claire Chambers of Absolutely Small, but the next issue could feature you! This monthly magazine, brought to you by CraftLeftovers.com, will also be featuring patterns from Absolutely Small in their recently released March 2010 issue that is all about plush!

* For information on submissions to Craft Leftovers Monthly and a list of deadlines, see their contributions page.

Folks from "down south" may have had the opportunity to see the work of the Plush Team's own Fluffy Flowers in the July/August 2008 issue of Savannah Magazine. To check out the issue cover and spread featuring Felicia Haywood's owls, check out her blog.

Portraits of Animals
Portraits of Animals Volume 1 and Volume 2 are self-published books by Zazu Faure. The second volume of Portraits of Animals is organized by the re-purposed sweaters from which the pieces were made. Each chapter focuses on one sweater and the variety of animal forms created from it.

This tour has been a lot of fun and I hope you'll join us again soon for our next volume of Plush Team Emitto. Next time around, we'll look at Plush Teamers who have published patterns and where you can get your fuzzy little hands on em'

And don't forget to keep your eyes on the blog for the big announcement of our upcoming book!

Randomly Cute Wednesday Featuring: Rowan's Kitchen Mouse and DogDaemona

Rowan has some mice in her kitchen. They nibble on fruit, cheese, bread and everything else they can find. This is one of the cutest mice to ever enter her kitchen. He is made of soft cuddle plush so he's nice to snuggle.

Rowan’s kitchen mouse is one of the many cute creatures made by DogDaemona who calls herself ‘a fun loving kind of science nerd artist!’ She has worked with all kinds of materials from paint to wood to stone, but in 2008 she discovered that she loves to sew and has never looked back. She says ‘The little pets that I make amuse me absolutely to no end. Every piece I make is my new favourite. I pay excruciating attention to detail and work hard at making each item the best it can be.’

You can see more of her work in her etsy shop at http://www.dogdaemona.etsy.com/ and check out her blog at http://www.dogdaemona.com/

Meet the Maker Monday: Abbydid

Abbydid plushies don’t just sit pretty. The shop's proprietress Abby Langdon creates snugly monstrosities you’ve just gotta touch. Her Knucklebiters and Wibbly Woos beg you to plunge your hands in them--if you dare. Meet Cincinati’s self-proclaimed domestic goddess, and be sure to poke around her shop: www.abbydid.etsy.com

1. Abby, tell us about your process of making plush.

I'll get an idea in my head and let it stew. Once the idea has percolated for a while, it boils over and has to come out - that's when I drop everything and give it my full attention. I allow myself to make mistakes, adapt and tweak. I love getting my hands into a big pile of fur and seeing what comes of it.

2. Where did you learn your skills?

I was part of an amazing art program in high school, and minored in fine arts in college. Having knowledge of color theory and being able to visualize a piece are two skills I use most from that education.

When my son was a baby, I borrowed my mother's 35-year old Bernina to sew clothes and soft toys. She taught me to thread the bobbin and sew a straight line, and from there I self-taught.

3. Tell us about your workspace.

I used to work in a little room in the basement that we dubbed the "burrow" –hence my tagline "fresh from the burrow." That room is now a storage space for my hoarded craft supplies.

A typical night finds my son building battleships out of legos, my daughter throwing a birthday party for puppies, my husband working on his laptop, and me assembling Wibbly Woos, all on the dining room table. I love that. I live in a 50's ranch, and our dining room is what used to be called a Florida room. It’s surrounded with windows and doors so I can be part of whatever the kids are doing, keep an eye on dinner and still grab a minute to work on a project.

4. Talk about your inspirations.

My husband and kids are great about giving suggestions or letting me bounce ideas off of them. Some of my best ideas come from customers perusing my booth at craft shows. They tell me what they’d love to see next!

My favorite artists have a sense of whimsy and a strong use of color. Marc Chagall is one of my all-time favorite artists. Honestly, my biggest source of inspiration and motivation is the Plush Team! Surrounding yourself with talented and supportive people makes an enormous difference. I couldn't ask for a better group.

5. How do you promote your work?

I have a blog, Facebook page, and Twitter account for abbydid, but I generally ignore all of them. People learn about me through word-of-mouth or stumble across me through Etsy or Flickr. I work hard to be friendly and attentive to my customers, and they spread the word. I like to think karma has a hand in any success I have:)

6. How do you fit plush-making into the rest of your life?

In every nook and cranny I can find! Having a workspace central to the hubbub in my house helps immensely. I also always have a bag of work on hand that I can grab as I run out the door. At soccer practice, school meetings, dinner at Panera you’ll find me sitting off to the side, stuffing a creature and sewing him up.

7. Describe your dreams for new designs or projects.

I’d like to focus on making more art pieces this year. My work has primarily been for the young or young-at-heart. My plush are snuggly and soft and happy to see you, which I think is wonderful, but I'd like to step up to a new level and give my work a dimension of sophistication. What I have simmering in my brain is an idea based on the pretend friends I had as a child, and I'm eager to sequester myself and bring it to fruition.

8. Which other makers do you admire and why?

Gosh, what a hard question! I admire other indie crafters for their quirky, kind personalities. I feel like I've been looking for this population all my life! I am so fascinated with what people think up and produce, and I love that there are other oddballs like me.

Craftwise, I am awestruck with anyone who can work small. I find miniature food fascinating. I am also blown away by anyone who crochets or knits, as I don’t have the patience for either. I have a million favorites, as you’ll see in my Etsy shop. If you dig down to the beginning of my favorites, you’ll see a certain Etsian I’ve had a plush crush on since the beginning, before I even sold plush. Go see for yourself:)

9. What advice can you give makers who dabble in plushiness?

Don't vacuum the fluff out of your nostrils, no matter how good of an idea it may seem at the time.

Let yourself make mistakes. That's often when you’ll learn the most. Some of the best creations come out of happy accidents. Be forgiving of your limitations, and don't expect perfection. Sometimes quirky, offbeat, and asymmetrical is exactly what makes something lovable and desirable.

Happy Birthday Katarzyna!

Plush Team Book Shelf: "The Cute Book"

I purchased The Cute Book by Aranzi Aronzo a couple years ago after stumbling across the title at my local book store. I specialize in amigurumi crochet, but I'm always interested to see how different artists do kawaii in other media. Besides, the supplies listed on page 4 of the book indicated that I would only need some felt, embroidery floss, needles, and glue -- items that were already plentiful in my craft room -- so I decided to give it a try.

As a former instruction writer, I was really happy with the clear and cleverly illustrated instructions. Each step includes a picture that illustrating the technique used (for example, back stitching) and the pages are filled with cute photos of the finished pieces that are sure to inspire.

Projects range from the cute cats (shown), birds, and frogs to more strange and sinister aliens, "bad guys," and kidnappers. the book also includes instructions for making felt accessories using the patterns, including key chains, hair bows, and appliqued tote bags.

The only issue I found with the book is the size of the finished items. I didn't think to photograph for scale, but the little black cat shown in the first two pictures is about as tall as my ring finger. While the tiny size definitely adds to the kawaii factor, it can make sewing the dolls super challenging.

For example, I started working on the frog design shortly after finishing my cat. I think I'm relatively dexterous when it comes to handling tiny things and while I'm not the greatest at sewing, I do have patience enough to try again until I get it right. But, my poor sad frog was never finished...

The biggest issue was getting my stitches to look tidy. Because the patterns are so small, the designs are nearly impossible to sew together with the wrong sides facing. As a result, all of your stitches end up on the outside of the finished object. Try as I might, my hands just aren't skilled enough to get the same looks that are shown on the finished objects in the book.

That said, the book is still a fantastic addition to my library -- both for the ideas and the techniques explained in the instructions. I will probably attempt more of the cute book critters in the future, but next time around you had better believe I'll be enlarging the patterns!

Randomly Cute Wednesday featuring Bert and FurWillFly

This is Bert the BumbleBear. Bert is part bumble bee, part bear and is a member of the Hybrids, a family of odd but lovable creatures.

After the long cold winter of hibernation Bert is up and buzzing about. He's a huge fan of summer and isn't afraid to admit why - he loves flowers! Being a Bumble-Bear, he is not only able to eat honey, but to make it too! That means he spends most of his time doing one or the another, and is usually on a bit of a sugar high.

Bert was made by FurWillFly - a creative scientist or perhaps a scientific creator! After studying Biological Sciences at university she thought that her creative side was dead and buried until one until one day it just burst out and she had to start making things again! But her scientific side has not been lost - many of her creations have an anatomical twist to them!

You can find FurWillFly on etsy at http://www.furwillfly.etsy.com

Mr. Toastee makes some new friends!

Woot! I came home from work one day last month(yes, I am seriously slacking on my post) and found the most wonderful little package waiting for my on my porch. It was from my PT plush swapee, Moonscreations! Mr. Toastee could not wait to tear into the box to see what was inside! He was so excited when he saw that it contained 3 uber cute new friends for him! A Forest Moon Bun, A little kitty that looks just like Max E. Pad, and a little baby groundhog!

Mr. Toastee and the Moonbun were immediately inseperable! They love to go out an play in all this snow that we are having!

They even met a few new monster friends while they were outside in a snow....but that's a story for another time....
Daphne, my Pullip, immediately layed claim to the little Max E. Pad kitty as soon as he jumped out of the box.

And the little groundhog, well, he came to work with me and lives in my office. He loves to play with the other little toys on my desk, but I caught him nibbling on Kelly's Bonsai at her desk....nomnomnom

Thank you!!!!

Grandpa Wibbles is in the house!

How delighted was I when I received a HUGE Plush Team gift from the one and only Abbydid (aka Santa) :)

Of course, in my excitement I wasn't able to take pictures of my Plush Team swap until I was hugging it excitedly and squealing like a little girl!

I would love to introduce you to my amazing, awesome Wibbly Granfather Christmas (which I have already named grandpa wibbles)!!

He has already taken to living with us quite well - He enjoys hanging out in my craft space over seeing what I am making.

He is quite fond of cooking and loves to spend his free time browsing the internet for new recipes:

And of course, he loves his afternoon nap :)

We just love our Grandpa Wibbles!! Thank you so much Abby!!

The Cat's Meow

Last month I was anxiously waiting to find time to visit home and check my mail. Finally, last weekend I made the trip back, and discovered this wonderful musical cat from Patti Haskins!
Gotta love the shades, right?

One of my beloved cats passed away last month, having lived to the ripe old age of 18. She was a striped cat, so I've been collecting things or commissioning things on etsy that remind me of her. So this is a wonderful addition to my collection :)
