March Giveaway Winner!

The entries are all in and the winner of our March giveaway has been selected! Congratulations Snowflake07 -- you have won Abbydid's adorable little blue knucklebiter!

We'll be in touch to get your shipping address and in the mean time, it's time to start getting excited about our April giveaway! Look for details later this week!

Randomly Cute Wednesday Featuring: Zfla and The Tan and Pink Cashmere Rabbit

Zfla – also known as Zazu Faure, makes amazingly cute plush from repurposed materials. She says, ‘flotsam and jetsam repurposed is my motto.’ She strips her plush designs down to their essential forms-employing a limited amount of moves to render each animal's essential characteristics. This makes her plush wonderfully simple but yet instantly recognisable. I just love this rabbit – especially his little tail!

Meet the Maker Monday: Jefita

Jefita (alert: the J sounds like an H) crafts a full menagerie of sweet, felt animals.
Visit her shop and amazing hand-stitching at Jefita.etsy.com.

Where did you learn to make plush?

Making plushies started out as a fun afternoon project that turned into a full time obsession. I've always been a crafty person. I pick up tidbits from books, friends, family and the Internet, but I also make up a lot of techniques.  Sometimes I end up a bit over my head, but it's totally worth it.

Tell us about your process of making plush. What materials do you love?

Usually a character or creature gets stuck in my head and I have to make it.  I make lots of sketches and agonize over how to put it together.  Making a new item sometimes takes several iterations until the pattern is just right.  Felt allows me to work on a small scale and I like being able to see all the stitches.  I also love working with fleece because it's just so cuddly.

Describe your workspace.

I have a big L-shaped desk with my computer on one side (having kickin' tunes or Hulu nearby is important) and all my felt and sewing materials on the other.  Lots of little proto-creatures keep me company. I like seeing all the different colors and materials at once so I know what I have to work with.

I have a problem with collecting tools. I have a more pairs of scissors than is probably healthy for one person to own!

Half of my bedroom has been converted to nefarious sewing purposes too for things that require a sewing machine.  It's looking more and more like a muppet crime scene these days.

What inspires you?

I love cartoons and children's books so I like an element of the whimsical in my work.  My friends and family give me all sorts of great ideas, too.
I was thrilled to join the Plush Team because so many of my heroes are already in it!  It’s inspiring and encouraging to see what you can accomplish with a needle and thread and some dedication.

How do you fit plush-making into the rest of your life?

I used to have a part-time job, but now I make plush full time.  I'm lucky that my husband can provide most of our income and that he’s supportive of my self-employment. I love the freedom to arrange my schedule. The hard part is knowing when to stop working.  Sometimes I work through my weekend before I realize it's gone.

Describe your dreams for new designs or projects.

I always have too many ideas and not enough hours in the day. I'm trying to develop some people-plush and I’d also like making more one-of-a-kind pieces.  I've been considering a pattern book for some of my little animals.

What advice can you give makers who dabble in plushiness?

Practice!  Don't be discouraged if you're creations seem wonky at first.  Some of my first plushies looked like mutant rejects, and not the cute kind.  Even now it may take me two or three tries to get a pattern that looks how I want it to.  Keep at it all the little things, like your stitches and how you stuff things. If you’re short on funds, felt is a great material!  It is inexpensive and great to work with.  Don't forget to hit up the remnant bin at your local fabric store.  You can find all sorts of neat tidbits that are half price.

Where else we can find you and your awesome plush?

B is for...

With Easter on the way, everyone is thinking that B is for bunnies... but check out these Baby Blue Bunnies from Zazu Faure of ZFLA:

While we're on the topic of blue, it seems like a lot of Plush Teamers are inspired by this cool, soothing color. It was impossible to pick just one item to represent the color blue, so here's a collage featuring some of my favorites:

In it, you'll find a Blue Plaid Rat Doll by The Raggy Rat, Patti Haskins's Betty Blue Scribbled Cat, a Blue Mini Spring Bunny by Plush Goodness, Little BlueBot by Fur Will Fly, a Wicked Blue Moon Bun from Moon's Creations, and Blu the Cat -- made by Plush Goodness and available in the Plush Team Shop.

Some things that don't come to mind so easily when you think of the letter B are Big Brains.. as in Fur Will Fly's Big Brain Creature.

You can also pick up Big Brain Blank Greeting Cards in the Fur Will Fly shop! What a great pick-me-up for a special student with the final exam blues!

And don't forget Bumble Bees -- like these sweeties from Moon's Creations:

And while we're on the topic of sweets, how about some Bon-Bons from The Itsy Bitsy Spider?

If you're looking for someone to help you eat your bon-bons, you can always give Jefita's Big Pig a call:

But, my two-year-old daughter will firmly agree that the best B word of all is bubbles. So, we'll end today's tour with a soak in the tub and Patti Haskins's Bubbles Print!

Thanks for Browsing!

All are available now in the Plush Team etsy shop.

The green slogan tattooed Earth Day Ernie by Dingogirl66 is made with upcycled fur scraps, cotton print, and a vintage recycled pillowcase.

Fezz the Love Bot Bot by Samaria Project is made from a pair of upcycled jeans, while this amazing miniature diorama by Hibou Cards is made by needle felting the whole landscape- and measures only 2.5 inches tall by 3.5 inches wide!

These cuddly creations by abbydid are made by upcycling a stroller blanket and a baby blanket into her lovable Wibbly Woos in Blue and Pink flavors.

Last but not least, Wooldebeast makes fantastic creations like Flora Beast and Snake Beast out of wonderful repurposed sweaters.

Randomly Cute Wednesday Featuring: moonscreations and The Moon Rabbit

Moonscreations began designing amigurumi in 2005 and hasn’t looked back since. Her trademark Moon Bun, short for Moon Bunny, was created in December 2006 and she says that like real bunnies, they've multiplied and taken over her life!

On behalf of moonscreations I would like to welcome you to the land of Moon, where tiny bunnies dance and sing. They love to make new friends and dress in fancy costumes. I would like to introduce you to one such bunny -The Moon Rabbit - a rabbit that lives on the moon in East Asian folklore. The legends about the moon rabbit are based on the markings of the moon, which appear to be a rabbit pounding in a mortar. In Japanese folklore, the rabbit is pounding mochi. Mochi is a Japanese rice cake made of glutinous rice pounded into paste and molded into shape. While eaten year-round, mochi is a traditional food for the Japanese New Year.

Mothers Matter!

The PlushTeam's January/February project was to donate plush to the Lauren Rose Albert Foundation's Mothers Matter program!

Mothers Matter is a great program that delivers gift baskets to single moms...whether they are trying to go back to school to get a good job, if they or their kid(s) are sick and in hospital, or if they are in some urgent need and cannot get help from government programs.

They prepare and distribute thousands of gift bags for special mom's like these for mother's day, and also have an "everyday" gift bag program that they do throughout the year.

There is a terrific video on their website with lots of photos of what they do. It is heart-warming and inspiring!

We had 16 team members donate to this great cause.

I was the lucky one who got to hand-deliver the plush to Susan Rose. Susan started the foundation, and really puts her all into it!

She was really excited about all of the stuff we brought her, and says a big THANK YOU to all who donated! We poured through the box of plushies admiring each one!

the delivery of the plush

I have to admit...it was a little tough to hand them over. I became quite attached to them while they were staying with me ;)

Here is another photo with ALL of the donations. I think there were about 60 in total! We are going to make a lot of moms happy!

mother's matter!

Below is a list of all the team members who donated (with links to their etsy shops)! THANK YOU so very much for your generosity and your hard work!!! :D

Meet the Maker Monday: Moon's Creations

Moon’s Creations, who also answers to Marcy (and Mom—she’s not picky) crotchets amigurumi that fit into the palm of your hand. They’re sweeter than candy—and I’m not the only one who thinks so. Marcy’s sales are staggering and it’s not hard to see why. Check out her shop at: http://MoonsCreations.etsy.com

Tell us about your process of making plush items.
Before I begin a piece, I always know exactly how I want it to look. Fabric is cut free-hand, because I can see every step in my head. If I'm having trouble figuring out how a piece will work, I'll do a few detailed sketches, usually just to capture the vision so I can work on it later.

What materials do you love and why?

I like acrylic yarns, although I wish they liked my hands more. I have some ugly calluses from working with stiff acrylic for so long. Acrylic makes for a firmer material that gives the bulk and shape. Wool and cotton, while more friendly towards my hands, is too soft and doesn’t sculpt up as well.

Where did you learn your skills?

My mother taught me to crochet when I was young and I made up the rest as I went along. After I’d been running my own business for a few years, I discovered I was crocheting “wrong.” My amigurumi aren’t made with traditional stitches and I hold my hook miserably. I’ve since learned how to crochet “properly,” but I still prefer my “wrong” to their “right.”

Describe your workspace.

I have an entire bedroom dedicated to my workspace. It’s poorly lit and always cold, but I need to keep my furry beasts from spreading their allergens. This is why I jokingly refer to the room as the Bunny Mines. I’m often separated from my family for a majority of the day while I work in the cold-dark, “carving out” Moon Buns.

Despite being such an unwelcoming place, the room is very organized. When I was young, I had a Berenstain Bears book about the little bears’ messy room. I was struck by their organization with labeled boxes and shelves. I have lots and lots of shelves and labeled boxes in my office.

How do you fit plush-making into the rest of your life?

Or how do I fit my life into plush-making? (lol) I don’t have much of a life outside of crocheting. At least, that’s what it feels like. I work from the moment I get up, take a break to go to work, come home and get back to crocheting until late in the evening. (Wash, Rinse and Repeat.) My weekends are spent crocheting to keep up with orders and add new items to my shop. I’ve been tempted to close down for a week to give myself a break, but I feel as if I’m wasting time if I’m not working.

Describe your dreams for new designs or projects.

My most ambitious work will be this year’s 31 Amigurumi in October series. This is a series every October, where every day of the month I release a new, never-before-seen Moon Bun. I’m really pushing myself with these new designs and I think Moon Bun collectors will enjoy them.

What advice can you give makers who dabble in plushiness?

Don’t listen to nay-sayers. When someone tries to tell you that what you’re doing is incorrect or a waste of time, just pop in your earbuds and keep working. I’ve been very blessed with family and friends who have always been there for me. They’re an awesome bunch of cheerleaders. I know a lot of people aren’t so blessed so this is me saying, “You can do it. I believe in you.”

Where else can fans of Moons Creations find you?

A is for...

One of the best things about the Plush Team is the incredible diversity in the types of plush creations these creative artists come up with. It's hard to take everything in at once, so we thought we'd have a little fun with the classic A to Z game. You know how it goes... someone gives a category -- for example, "animals" -- and participants try to come up with animals beginning with each letter of the alphabet.

So, let's get started on our A to Z of plushy goodness, shall we? A is for.....

April the Needling By Needlings

Fleece Animal - Denver By Samaria Project

Woodland Acorns COCOA by Dingo Girl

Autumn the Golden Owl By Lowell and Son

Acorna - A pompom headed pup By Absolutely Small

Last but certainly not least A is for both amigurumi and ASPCA. So, here we have:

ASPCA Charity Moon Bun Amigurumi Bunny Rabbit By Moon's Creations

What will we think of next? Stay tuned for our next edition of plush A to Z... brought to you by the letter B!
