PT Stitchy World Tour!

PT and his travel journal, where PlushTeam
members will add notes about his journey.
The PlushTeam's mascot, PT Stitchy, is setting off on a world tour!  PT is visiting 36 plush artists in 6 different countries, travelling from coast to coast within the United States, and sharing his snapshots and adventures along the way.  He will of course keep meticulous records of his sight seeing antics in his handy dandy Field Notebook, complete with his very own image on the cover.

PT begins his world tour in Cincinnati, Ohio with me, Abby, the plush artist behind abbydid.  PT was kind enough to join us during a fun event called Second Sunday in the historic Over-the-Rhine.  This street festival takes place ever second Sunday during the summer months on Main Street in downtown Cincinnati.  Over-the-Rhine is the largest neighborhood in the country to be registered with the National Register of Historic Places, is home to a vibrant arts community, and is the inspiration behind the band of the same name.

PT admires all of the Italianate architecture in Over-the-Rhine.

PT enjoys a nicely pulled ale and some fine tunes at Neon's
PT poses with one of the four Shepard Fairey
murals installed this summer around town.
PT poses with a totally cute dude in the food truck.  Yum.
We had a fabulous time together, as you can see.  Cincinnati is finally catching up with the times and now has several delectable food trucks, including Cafe de Wheels, where not only is the service gorgeous (rawr) but the Mediterranean fries are delectable.  Cincinnati's Contemporary Arts Center hosted artist Shepard Fairey this summer, and he put up a few of his famous murals for the city to enjoy.  PT was very inspired.  And we wrapped up our visit with a frosty beverage and live music at the world famous Neon's.  I'm told they make a mean bloody Mary.

PT Stitchy and his travel journal jump
into their first class accommodations!
It was sad to see him go, but we wrote down our adventures with PT Stitchy in his log, put him in his envelope, and sent him on his way to the next Plush Teamer on the tour - The Itsy Bitsy Spider!

Want to join in the fun?  You can buy your own PT Stichy sewing kit RIGHT HERE to whip up your own Plush Team mascot and snap some pictures of him around town.  Submit them to us and we'll post them on the blog and facebook page!
We jotted down a few notes about
the visit before sending PT on his way.

A big thank you to my husband Jason, for being a good sport and getting these pictures of PT Stitchy for me while I (wo)manned my tent during the street fair.  Even the one I requested with the cute guy:)  What a trooper!

Happy Birthday Stephanie!

Meet the Maker Monday: BeBe Babies/Boom!Plush!

Shhh! The baby’s sleeping! Be very quiet when you read about Casie’s adorable plush babes. Tiptoe around her site BeBe Babies and Friends and don’t forget to visit her new shop, too: Boom!Plush!

How do you make plush?
I usually start with internet research and sketching. When I participated in the PlushYou Olympic challenge, I researched winter and the Olympics before I settled on a melting snowflake holding the Olympic torch.

When I work on other plushies like BeBe Babies, I generally work with patterns, although I rarely see them because my Mom sews for me. I put the dolls together.

Where did you learn your skills?
I learned to sew and make plush mostly by trial and error. I also have many books on how to make dolls, bears and other crafts. Most of my basic sewing skills have come from those books.

Describe your workspace.
I have a tiny room in the back of my tiny house that’s my designated office/craft room, although I mostly work on a card table in my living room.

What inspires your plushmaking?
I’m inspired by so many things: friends, crafts, arts, nature, blogs and other plush artists. I am constantly on the look-out for interesting colors and ideas.

How do you promote your work?

On my blog: http://bebebabies.blogspot.com/
And Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1262052441

Right now I don’t have a lot of time to promote. When I used to work on a computer all day I could chat, blog, renew listings and email. Luckily all that hard work has left me with steady business while I attend school.

How do you fit plush-making into the rest of your life?
Plush making used to be my number-one priority, and I sewed as much as I could. Now that I’m in school I have little time for sewing. I’m excited that summer school is almost over and I’ll have time to sew for the rest of the summer.

Any dreams for new designs or projects?
I love working on Plush Team challenges and hope to participate in all of them, but time doesn't always allow it. The challenges provide me with amazing opportunities to design new, interesting pieces.

I’m trying to put out a pattern and working on my new plush shop: Boom!Plush! I opened the new shop to have an outlet for plush creations that don't quite fit with the BeBe Babies theme. I hope to get that in full swing during the summer.

Which other makers do you admire?
I admire members on the Plush Team the most, especially Christina and Abby. Not only do they make awesome plush but they are the some of the most helpful, hardworking and dedicated people I have met. As far as artists’ plush, I own and admire too many to list!

Any advice for makers who dabble in plushiness?
Just do it! So many times I started making something and was certain that it wouldn’t work, but I kept going and it all worked out in the end. Mistakes happen and most of the time they can be fixed by improvising. If not, starting over isn't the end of the world. And be original. There’s always room for new ideas.

Meet the Maker Monday: Raggy Rat

Toymaker extraordinaire Catherine L Owen (The Raggy Rat), doesn’t just stitch front to back. She designs and sews jointed, poseable plush. See all her gorgeous vermin at http://www.etsy.com/shop/raggyrat and get the dirt on the real Catherine L Owen in this interview by Sarah Raymond of Wooldebeast.

Tell us about your process of making plush items.
I love to be busy. Often I start with a combination of fabrics and create a pattern by sketching, cutting, sticking bits of paper back on, and filling up my waste paper bin! I love also adding embellishments and finishing with lovely bright eyes to bring my creation alive ... unless it's a bus or a ray-gun!

Where did you learn your skills?
When I was 6, I made a mouse from a few gleaned scraps from school. My mother found me a book in a jumble sale, full of ideas. I set out to teach myself. I also went away to art college and got a degree, and love to work in mixed media especially. For part of my applied arts degree, I did machine embroidery—a good way to make the change from hand sewing, and an introduction to an appliance I rarely put away nowadays!

Describe your workspace.
I have a very young family, and I work out of my dining room, often along side my young girls doing their paint, play-doh—or even these days, some hand sewing. I make lots of mess and then have to sweep it all aside for dinner, although I do have side tables for longer projects such as a large plush, a costume or a puppet that may lurk in pieces. I have fabric in the bedrooms where I can fit it in! On a nice day, I sit in the garden and sew.

Discuss your inspirations—plushy, artistic, musical, personal ….
About 3 years ago, I fell in love with Flikr, and started collecting favourite images. I learned a lot about what can be done in the art of plush. I love reading blogs such as Penguin and Fish, Softies Central, and The Needle where the content is exciting and varied. I have been a member of The Plush Team for 18 months, where I find juicy challenges. They help me try things I wouldn’t think of if left to my own devices.

I love to sing in a community choir and even perform solos. My musical tastes are eclectic, but must usually be played nice and loud.

How do you promote your work?
I love to keep my blog lively and interesting, and to read comments people leave. Visit www.raggyrat.blogspot.com
The Raggy Rat also has a facebook page:
http://www.facebook.com/home.php#!/pages/The-Raggy-Rat/352336335045
and a twitter account: http://twitter.com/raggyrat
I also list work on Teddy Talk and sometimes chat there.

How do you fit plush-making into the rest of your life?
Three of my four daughters are at home with me daily, but we all get on with our things. I believe it does them good to see me at work, and lends a relaxed atmosphere. Sometimes I wield glue guns when they are tucked up in bed, but I don’t do much in the evenings. I pick up and put down sewing projects all day, in between other 'chores'.

Describe your dreams for new designs or projects.
I still need to make the ultimate jointed, well-proportioned rat. I also keep having to make pigs ... things just pop into my head and ask me to make them ....and maybe a fox? Oh yes - someone asked me to have a go at molly the owl.

What advice can you give makers who dabble in plushiness?
Don’t be afraid to stab your fingers - quite a lot; nor to throw things half done in the bin and not feel guilty. The more you do, the more you learn. And never run out of stuffing. You might cry!

She loves to see what kinds of cute little plushies she can create with just a bit of yarn and some poly-fil.
