August Giveaway Winner!

The August giveaway tallies are in and we have our winner....

Congratulations to KissingToast -- You'll be taking home Absolutely Small's mischievious little Agnes! Absolutely Small will be in touch with you shortly to arrange shipping.

A big thank you once again to everyone who entered and stay tuned for the September giveaway details.

Plush Vegas Winners, Baby!

The Plush Team Las Vegas creations really attracted the voters, 110 people made their choices and here they are, in all their Vegas glory.

The Show Biz category was claimed by that ensemble of mild buns: Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine by Moon's Creations. Close runner up was Cristal Bazoom, The Vegas Owl Showgirl by Hibou Cards

The Gaming category was very close, but Dice Head Croupier by Out of the Frame ended up ahead of the pack and takes the win.

That brings us to our final category, the glorious neon tackiness that is Las Vegas Signs. That which make the strip the gaudy, tackiness heaven that it is. We had two very strong entries, but the voters declared that the Huge Plush Team Billboard Neon Sign by Fluffy Flowers would take home the prize.

I say this every time, because it is true. Every challenge is surpassed by the next. Each of these thirteen Las Vegas creations were simply amazing. All participating artists need to take a bow. Your work is fabulous. I can't wait to see what the next challenge will bring.

Meet the Maker Monday: Plush Goodness

Leeanna Butcher, a Canadian living in Northern California, stitches creatures that look like they leaped out of the pages of children’s picture books. Meet the maker behind the lovable characters here. Stop by her shop, too! www.plushgoodness.etsy.com

How do you make plush?
All my plush start with sketches, as many as it takes to get the design the way that I want it. Usually I draw until I start giggling to myself. Then I know that sketch is the right one. I make the pattern, choose fabrics, and head to the sewing machine.

Where did you learn your fancy skills?
I received my BFA degree in Character Animation from CalArts, so that's where the drawing comes from, but the sewing is a different story. I had one sewing class in Junior High, which I HATED. Sewing clothes and following a traditional pattern still makes me want to climb the walls. Many years later, I was doing an illustration when saw a pile of leftover felt. I wanted to do something creatively different than painting. I grabbed my emergency sewing kit, cut out the pieces of my creature, and hand-stitched him together. It was total love at first sew. I knew as soon as he was finished that this was something that I wanted to do every day for the rest of my life. Definitely one of your ah-ha moments!

I hand-stitched my first 15-20 creatures, but the tendinitis got so bad that I had to buy a sewing machine. I worked out patterns based on sketches and have learned to sew plush designs by trial and error. I'm constantly learning from my mistakes. I still have a hard time following other people's patterns, which is sad, really.

What’s your work area like?
I turned a spare bedroom into my studio. This past fall I was lucky enough to get my mother-in-law's old sewing table, so now I have better organized space. It's filled with bins of fabric, buttons, bags of ribbon, and of course, my whole plush collection. It's really inspiring to look up and see work from so many of the artists that I admire. Helps to keep me on my toes!

What inspires your plush designs?
I am definitely a kid of the 70s and 80s. All those Hanna-Barbara, Saturday morning and after school cartoons were a big influence. Not to mention Nintendo. Reading gets me to think differently too. We have a house full of art books—great for a good dose of inspiration.

There are so many makers that I admire. I’ll only name a few: Dolls for Friends, Scrumptious Delight, Herzensart, Greenstarstudio, Astulabee, Ninon, Junker Jane, Kup Kup Land, Siansburys, Cutesy but Not Cutesy, and the list goes on. I am constantly inspired to by the talent and drive of my peers on the Plush Team, as well as the amazing art I see on flickr and blogs.

How do you promote your work?
I have a blog which I try to update at least once a week: www.leeannasthread.blogspot.com
and I am on flickr as well: www.flickr.com/photos/designsbyl/

How do you fit plush-making into the rest of your life?
I’m lucky to be able to devote myself full-time to plush-making, which is fantastic. When I’m on a deadline, it can get a bit crazy in my house. The husband and dog have to fend for themselves, and they can feel a little neglected. I do have to remind myself to get groceries and do some cooking. It's too easy to get into a sewing groove and forget what time it is.

Any dreams for new designs or projects?
I just came up with a concept and sketches for new designs that I’d love to exhibit in a solo show. I also want to keep improving my sewing skills and getting my name out there to build my business.
I'd love to someday make my versions of the main characters from Alice in Wonderland.

What advice can you give makers who dabble in plush?
Have fun. Don't be afraid to make mistakes, and most of all, be true to your own creative vision!

Virtual Book Tour Wrap Up & Giveaway

Wow. It's been a great ride and an even better adventure visiting fellow Plush Teamers' blogs and learning about their contributions to the team annual, Get Stuffed! As we arrive back here on the team blog, I can't help but to revisit the past few weeks and think about some of the great tutorials, inspirations, and works that were shared along the way!

The tour kicked off with a visit to Fluffy Flowers's little web garden for a look at her creative process and a step-by-step tutorial to make a plush mermaid doll and studio apartment.

Next, was a visit with Yummy Pancake, where we learned about some of the inspirations for her wacky, food-related amigurumi creations.

In week two, we visited Fur Will Fly in the UK and hung out with her 365 Scientist while working through her creative process to make a plush red blood cell.

We then picked up and headed to the studio of Plush Goodness, where this illustrator-turned-plush-maker showed us her sketch book and how her ideas go from paper-to-plush.

Week three started out with the amazing DogDaemona and some crazy hijinx with her plush creations Rusty and Playboy. You'd be surprised what trouble a cute pair of foxes can get into!

We went from foxes to Moon Buns in the blink of an eye with a visit to Moon's Creations blog. In her post, Moon shares how seeing the work of other plush artists in the book inspire some of her own creations!

Our last tour stop left us with The Raggy Rat, who showed us some of her favorite pieces and shared why she chose them to represent her work in the annual.

I don't know about you, but I can't think of a better way to spend the month of August than visiting with these amazing plush makers. And, for those of you who have been following along, we have a special chance to win a plush prize pack!

Several plush makers have donated pieces to the prize pack and there are some AWESOME goodies to win! Of course, I won't say exactly what's in it just yet, because first you have to prove you're worthy by correctly answering the questions on our short quiz!

Click here to get started, and Good Luck!

Oh, and P.S. The last day to enter the giveaway is  9/3/2010. The winner will be announced on 9/4!

Tiny Plush Tuesday -- On Wednesday?!

The tiny plush were all in the shop and ready to go on Tuesday, but the blog writer was no where to be found!

Perhaps she was caught standing high on a chair for fear that one of The Raggy Rat's adorable little mice would crawl over her toes...

Or possibly sleeping away the day in a dark crypt after accidentally using one of Boom Plush's vampire pencils!

The truth is, we'll just never know -- but that shouldn't stop you from heading over to the Plush Team shop to pick up one of these treasures for your own!

Meet the Maker Monday: ThEm DoLLz

Jen Musatto of ThEm DoLLz stitches loveable monstrosities in a mix of fabrics. Meet the maker behind the monsters here and if you dare, visit her shop at: http://www.etsy.com/shop/ARTOFME

How do you make ThEM DoLLz?

Ideas usually come to me when I'm lying in bed at night. I have insomnia, so I often lay there and think about faces. Once I have an idea, I scribble it down on paper. Later I pick out fabric combos, buttons, and hair color. I don’t use patterns. I like flying by the seat of my pants. My favorite part is turning the fabric outside-in and seeing what the doll looks like!

Where did you learn your skills?

    Uh ... skills ... hmmm ....

Being creative and crafting has always been a big part of my life. I learned to sew a straight line with a machine when I was 7. My mom taught me how to make a simple quilt for my dolls. A few years back I got a sewing machine for my birthday from my husband. I practiced stitches and sewing pillow cases. Since my dollz only have a front and back, they are similar to making pillow cases. Pretty simple.

    Describe your workspace.

Right now my workspace is my living room and kitchen table. I have
several totes of fabrics, buttons, thread, floss, and my sewing
machine. My husband surprised me for my 35th birthday by building me a studio in the basement. I'm planning out where I want everything to go, buying shelving, and picking out paint colors. So excited!

    What inspires you?

Definitely my two sons. My older son just started drawing monsters that he’d like to see come to life as a doll. His ideas are awesome. I find a lot of inspiration in the drawings of Tim Burton, Kathie Olivas, Mark Ryden, Ray Caesar, and John Casey. I love Low Brow art. Nature inspires me.
I've always wanted to make a giant plush tree with several faces. I love flowers. Simplicity is beautiful.

How do you promote your work?

    Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/them.dollz
    Blog: http://themdollz.blogspot.com/

I love doing shows as well. My customers have been my best form of promotion. I have a few customers who have spread the word about my dollz to their friends and now their friends are customers.

How do you fit plush-making into the rest of your life?

I have a few hours a day when my youngest son naps. I also stay up late and work when everyone goes to sleep. I'm always tired :(

What advice can you give makers who dabble in plushiness?

    Just dive in! Make mistakes!
